What Is a CNAME Lookup?

A CNAME lookup (also called a CNAME checker or CNAME search) asks DNS: "What hostname does this name alias to?" Unlike an A record, which returns an IP address, a CNAME returns another domain name - the canonical name. Resolvers follow that chain until they reach an A or AAAA record.

Teams use a CNAME check when connecting www to a CDN, pointing a shop subdomain to Shopify, verifying a Google Search Console domain via CNAME, or confirming Cloudflare DNS changes after a migration. This page runs the same live DNS engine as our full DNS lookup, locked to CNAME so the results stay focused on alias records.

One URL per keyword group: Broad DNS terms stay on /dns-lookup. CNAME-specific searches belong here. For SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and verification strings, use TXT record lookup.

Real CNAME Examples

These patterns show up constantly in production DNS. Use them as a reference when you interpret tool results.

www → apex or CDN

www.example.com. 300 IN CNAME example.com.
www.example.com. 300 IN CNAME example.com.cdn.cloudflare.net.

The first style points www at the apex (which then needs A/AAAA). The second is a typical Cloudflare or CDN flattened alias target. Always query www.example.com, not only example.com.

Shopify storefront

www.mystore.com. 3600 IN CNAME shops.myshopify.com.

Shopify expects the www (or custom subdomain) CNAME to target shops.myshopify.com. The apex often uses A records to Shopify IPs instead of a CNAME. If your CNAME checker still shows an old host, SSL and redirect checks in Shopify admin will keep failing until TTL expires.

Google domain verification (CNAME method)

googleabcdef123456.example.com. 300 IN CNAME google.com.

Google Search Console and some Workspace setups give a unique label that must CNAME to a Google host. Look up that exact label - not the website root - to confirm verification before clicking Verify.

Email or branding subdomain

link.example.com. 300 IN CNAME cname.example-esp.net.
static.example.com. 300 IN CNAME d123.cloudfront.net.

Common CNAME Mistakes

  • CNAME at the apex with other records: RFC rules say a name with a CNAME must have only that CNAME. Apex zones already have SOA/NS, so a bare CNAME on example.com is invalid unless your provider rewrites it as ALIAS/ANAME.
  • CNAME + A/TXT/MX on the same hostname: Adding a CNAME on mail.example.com while keeping MX or TXT there causes intermittent failures. Pick one model for that name.
  • Wrong target hostname: Shopify needs shops.myshopify.com, not your*.myshopify.com storefront URL. CDNs give a specific distribution hostname - copy it exactly.
  • Querying the wrong name: Verification CNAMEs live on a token subdomain. Checking only www will never show them.
  • Ignoring TTL / proxy orange-cloud: Cloudflare proxied names may look different depending on whether you query through recursive DNS vs looking at the DNS tab. Confirm both the DNS record and the proxy status.
  • Trailing-dot confusion: Absolute names end with a dot in zone files (shops.myshopify.com.). Most UIs hide the dot - do not double the domain by accident.

How to Check Cloudflare, Shopify, and Google CNAME Records

Cloudflare

  1. Open Cloudflare → DNS → Records and note the name, type (CNAME), content, and proxy status.
  2. Enter the full hostname in this CNAME lookup (include the subdomain). Compare the returned target with Cloudflare Content.
  3. If proxy is orange-clouded, public resolvers still see Cloudflare anycast IPs after following the chain; DNS-only (grey cloud) exposes the origin target more directly.
  4. After edits, wait for the previous TTL, then re-check from this tool and from a second network if possible.

Shopify

  1. In Shopify Admin → Settings → Domains, open the domain and note the required www CNAME target.
  2. Run a CNAME check on www.yourdomain.com. Expect shops.myshopify.com (or the target Shopify currently documents).
  3. Confirm the apex separately with an A record check via our full DNS tool - Shopify rarely wants a root CNAME.
  4. Only after DNS matches should you rely on Shopify's "Connected" status and SSL provisioning.

Google verification

  1. Copy the exact CNAME name and destination from Search Console or Workspace.
  2. Look up that hostname here; the value must match Google's target character-for-character.
  3. If you were given a TXT verification string instead, use TXT record lookup - do not mix methods on the wrong name.

CNAME vs A vs ALIAS

A / AAAA map a name straight to an IP. CNAME maps a name to another name and cannot share the label with most other record types. ALIAS / ANAME / flattened CNAME are provider features that synthesize A/AAAA answers at the apex while you manage an alias-like target in the UI. When this tool returns no CNAME but your site works, the apex is probably using A/AAAA or flattening - that is expected, not a failed CNAME search.

How to Use This CNAME Checker

  1. Enter the hostname that should have the alias (www, shop, cdn, or a verification label).
  2. Click Check CNAME. Results query Google DNS and Cloudflare DNS live.
  3. Compare the target host to your provider's docs. Follow related links for WHOIS, IP, or full DNS if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions - CNAME Lookup

Answers about CNAME checks, apex aliases, Shopify targets, and verification records:

What is a CNAME lookup?

A CNAME lookup queries DNS for Canonical Name records on a hostname. The answer is another hostname (the alias target), not an IP address. Resolvers then look up that target to find the final A or AAAA address.

What is the difference between a CNAME checker and a full DNS lookup?

A CNAME checker focuses only on alias records. A full DNS lookup returns A, AAAA, MX, TXT, NS, and other types in one pass. Use this page when you are verifying CDN, Shopify, or subdomain aliases; use DNS Lookup when you need the whole zone picture.

Can I put a CNAME on my root domain (example.com)?

Standard DNS forbids a CNAME at the apex when other records exist on that name (which apex names always need for SOA/NS). Many platforms offer ALIAS, ANAME, or flattened CNAME features that emulate apex aliases. Prefer A/AAAA or your DNS provider’s apex-alias feature for the root.

How do I check a Shopify CNAME?

Look up the subdomain Shopify asked you to point (often www). The CNAME target is typically shops.myshopify.com. Enter that hostname in this tool and confirm the value matches Shopify’s instructions exactly, including the trailing domain.

Why does my CNAME show NXDOMAIN or no records?

Common causes: you queried the apex instead of www, the record has not propagated yet, Cloudflare is proxying and you are looking at the wrong hostname, or the name uses an A record instead of a CNAME. Wait for TTL expiry and query the exact host Shopify, Cloudflare, or Google asked you to configure.

Is this CNAME lookup tool free?

Yes. Unlimited CNAME checks, no account required. Queries go to Google DNS and Cloudflare DNS over HTTPS for live results.

How this tool works

Runs the shared DNS lookup engine locked to CNAME queries against Google and Cloudflare DNS-over-HTTPS endpoints.

Limitations

Apex domains often use A/AAAA or provider ALIAS flattening instead of a CNAME. Proxied CDN hostnames may not match what you see in a DNS control panel.
